Bring on the Adventure. Moving on from Cubs in the Scouts Canada program, Scouts are from 11 to 14 years of age. Challenging hikes, weekend camps, canoe trips, planning your own mid-winter camp including building your lean-to are just a few of the outdoor activities that Scouts enjoy. Following their motto "Be Prepared" Scouts are forever trying new and more challenging activities. Scouts also enjoy an exciting variety of other activities: including games and sports, science and technology, the arts, culture and society, personal development and the environment.
Sipping on a hot chocolate while sitting around a warm fire after hiking in to a campsite you built the day before in mid-winter certainly instills a sense of accomplishment as well as self-confidence and team building that you might not find elsewhere.
The 23rd St. Catharines Scout Troop is always busy. Checkout some of the cool stuff we've done over the years!
- We started our Troop from scratch with two experienced Scouts and 5 brand new Scouts who moved up from Cubs.
- We planned camping outings and then camped out at Camp Wetaskiwin (fall, winter and spring) - in tents and in a lean-to. We had to learn what a lean-to was, then how to build it, then build it! Finding logs and spars and tying them to trees at -15ºC soon cools off your fingers! But after a steaming hot bowl of chicken soup can do wonders to warm you up! To cap off our lean-to exercise, we fought back the winter blues at Klondike Days by spending a brisk winter weekend in our lean-tos at Wetaskiwin (What do you mean you can see your breath inside the sleeping bag?).
- We had visits from the Coast Guard and a paramedic complete with ambulance (have you ever wondered if you can fall out of a stretcher if you get turned upside-down? You don't - but don't try it at home!
- We participated in a Remembrance Day Church Parade and we celebrated BP Week (Lord Baden-Powell, our founder) with a parade and a banquet with our parents.
- We had sleepovers at our meeting place and showed the Cubs some of our camping skills.
- We learned how to paddle a canoe and how to get back in the canoe after we fell out. How to pack our packs so they will stay dry?? Since we were already wet, we went for a swim and passed our swimming tests!
- We celebrated Jamboree-On-The-Trail by camping out in May (remember the 6am Thunderstorm? and breakfast in the rain!)
- To show our navigation skills we planned a bus trip from our hall to downtown - we didn't get lost, but we found out that Art's is a great place to spend some time waiting for the ride back!
- We spent 4 hours on a Friday night learning everything there was to learn about First Aid!
- We helped host a Pasta Dinner in November and a Car Wash in May - car washing's not bad, but the sausages and cookies were awesome!
- We went on a weekend canoeing and tenting trip (we even got a Friday off school to go!)
- We had parties galore: Halloween, Christmas, BP Week and the year-end BBQ.
- We had an Investiture Ceremony in October where we officially welcomed our new Scouts.
- In May we had a "Swimming-Up" and "Going-Up" Ceremony where final year Beavers "Swam-Up" to Cubs and final year Cubs "came-up" to join us in Scouts.
- In June we represented Scouts Canada at Decoration Day and laid a wreath at the Cenotaph.
- We had FUN!
